A ministry at our own back door . . .
A ministry that many people may not know about is our church’s Clothes Closet. Used items are received and made available to the public on Tuesday mornings. As people come in, an interview is conducted and the gospel is shared with those who visit our Clothes Closet. June Douglas has been working in this ministry for years. We asked her to share how God has used our Clothes Closet. How has God blessed you through this ministry? We are called to carry out the Great Commission of Matthew 28. Some are called to foreign countries. God has blessed me with a way to fulfill my heart’s desire to do mission work right here in Collierville. It is a blessing to be a blessing to those in need of clothes. When people visit the Clothes Closet, we share God’s love and a good word. Sometimes just a prayer and a hug will bring a smile to a face. It is a blessing to see them leave First Baptist encouraged and equipped to face another day.
What have you seen God do through the Clothes Closet ministry? A family of six was sent over to the Clothes Closet from the mom’s Bible study class. Because of our ability to fulfill her tremendous need for clothes and household items, the mother was overwhelmed by our generosity. As she visited the Clothes Closet over the next year, we were able to minister to her spiritual needs as well as her physical needs. From our close relationship with her at the Clothes Closet, our church family became more involved. Babysitting while her mom was in the hospital, taking furniture to her home, providing food and presents at Christmas were just some of the many ways she was helped. As a result of loving this lady and tending to her needs, she and some of her children came to a saving knowledge of Christ. Our Clothes Closet is located within our bus barn building just east of the gym. Donations may be dropped off there. Receipts are available in the church office.
